What is down?

Down is, basically, the soft layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers of birds.

Why buy down bedding?

Down is a fine thermal insulator and padding. It offers excellent thermal properties and has good lofting characteristics. Meaning that down traps small pockets of air efficiently and the pockets provide the thermal barrier. Down can also be packed into small spaces.

Down is considered to be the single best insulating material available due it's light weight, compressibility and heat retention.

Fill weight vs. Fill power

Fill weight is the weight of down/feathers included in the comforter, blanket, pillow or feather bed. Fill weight is a measure of quantity of the down, not it's quality.

Fill power is a measure of the quality of the down. The more the fill power, the larger and stronger the down clusters are. Large down clusters provide superior insulation, breathes better and lasts much longer than small delicate clusters. So when choosing how much fill power you need you should determine the level of warmth required.

What is baffling?

Baffling is the way in which down blankets and comforters are sewn. They are made with long horizontal and vertical channels or sewn-through box design which helps keep the down in place for an even distribution. The technique will keep the down from shifting and causing "cold spots" in your bedding.
